What Does It Take To Become A Good Bartender?

By: John Freeman

For a lot of people, bartending is considered a cool job. Especially for people who like going out and hanging out at bars. You don't just serve your favorite drinks to customers; you also get to know other people and eventually build friendship with them. But bartending is not a job for all. If you want to become a good bartender, you must possess the necessary qualities that make a good bartender. If you are on the brink of deciding to become a bartender, then you must know if you have what it takes to become one.

Bartenders are seen as salespersons. They have to sell as much drink as possible. They need to have a lot of reserved strategies or gimmicks in order to invite customers to buy more. Some bartenders do this by putting up a show. Doing flairs and magic tricks with shakers and glasses. Anything that will make a customer loosen their pockets. And to keep it simple, there's only one thing that makes a good bartender according to bar owner's point of view: the ability to make money!

Bartending is not only a physical activity. It also requires mental ability. A good memory is the key. Or you can use easy-to-learn mnemonic sentences. A mnemonic sentence is a memory tool and helps you to remember a lot of cocktail combinations.

Bartenders need to have good grooming and nice looks. This is to attract more customers. But not to be discriminating, good looks aren't the only qualities that a bartender should have. It should be well blended with a good personality.

Bartenders need to have a good personality like some sort of customer hospitality. If it means listening to the customer's problems, joking around as if the two of you are friends, remembering the customer's names and the likes. Bartenders are celebrities, besides the work they do; they need to socialize with a lot of people, different types of people. Forget being stiff. It won't get a bartender anywhere.

Many people are joking around that the best bartenders in town are the ones who were once the customers, the drunkards. Whatever you call it. This joke could be true. Knowledge in liquors, beer, wines and cocktails is a plus. You don't need much mnemonics since you know them already. You've tasted them already. It would be a lot easier for a bartender to remember something if he or she has already experienced the drink. For those who aren't drinkers, then you could enroll in a bartending school to get a better knowledge on cocktails and drinks.

Since bartenders are salespersons, they should know how to handle money. Especially the money that customers pay. Some average math skills would help. Deficiencies in the revenue will definitely put a lot of drawback on the bartender. His pay check might suffer due to the losses.

Undoubtedly, a bartender must be responsible and a good team player to his other teammates. He must be well-coordinated with the other crew members in order to provide quality service to the customers.

There are lots of bartenders around. And like salespersons, they have to stand-out among the rest to gain more customers. A bartender must have something unique with him. Something like an amazing skill will surely help lift his popularity. He's free to do whatever he wanted to as long as he can deliver quality service.

Most of all, when it comes to service, a bartender must be fast and efficient. Shows and tricks are good ways to attract customers but it should not take a lot of time. Customers are not that patient to wait for the show to finish before they can get their drink. A bartender might end up losing customers if he does service that way.

A good bartender must be a people person. In short, he must be used to getting along with a lot of people. Loners don't have a place in bartending. You'll get to meet a lot of people. You can't avoid it.

There's no license to becoming a good bartender. All it takes is a good balance between service and profit. Too much profiteering is not anymore beneficial. A bar might end up bankrupt if so. Too much service is also not beneficial on the bar's part. A bartender should keep some kind of mystery to keep customers coming and asking for more.

The Best Flavored Tea Pluckings

By: Jon M. Stout

If you’re new to flavored teas, no doubt you’re wondering how to choose flavored teas of the best quality. The variety of the tea, the country in which it’s grown, the way it’s processed, the time it’s harvested and the way it’s flavored all affect the way a flavored tea will taste. In many varieties of tea, the time of harvest is particularly important, and can be difficult to understand and determine.

Following is some information that can help you choose the best flavored teas based on their harvest time. Flavored teas come in white, green, black and oolong varieties, and all varieties have different harvesting requirements for the best flavor.

Green tea –Flavored green teas have a very natural and mild flavor and brew to a pale green or light amber color. They are often somewhat sweet, and are described by many to be grassy in flavor. Many people who don’t particularly like the flavor of plain green teas, love flavored greens, because the flavorings mask the grassy taste while leaving the lightness that makes green tea so tasty.

Green tea harvesters often pluck green tea multiple times during the growing season. However, the first pluckings, or the “first flush” green teas will always be the best. This is because this first flush is picked in the spring, before the weather gets too hot. Tea that is plucked later in the growing season has baked in the heat and sun before harvest, which compromises the tea’s flavor.

White tea- All white tea is first flush tea. White tea is, by definition, picked only in the spring, when the tea plant blooms for the first time of the growing season. The tea is harvested before the buds are fully opened and while they’re still covered with a fine white hair, which is why it’s called white tea. One of the reasons that white tea is the rarest of all teas is because it can be harvested just once during the growing season. Flavored white teas are not yet common, but they are gaining availability. White teas are the mildest and sweetest of all teas, and absorb the fragrances and flavorings very well.

Black Tea – Most flavored teas are made from black tea, though other varieties are growing in availability. The best flavored black teas are also made from the first flush, for the same reason that was mentioned about green tea. Later flushes of black tea have been exposed to more heat and sun, and their flavor may have been compromised. The exception to this rule is Assam black teas, grown in the Assam region of India. The second flush of Assam black teas are said to be the best of the season. So, if you find an Assam flavred tea, look for second flush of the season.

Oolong Tea –Oolong teas are semi-fermented, meaning that they go through a fermentation process like black teas, but for a much shorter period of time. Most oolong teas are fermented to about 30%, unless they are pouchong oolong teas from Taiwan, which are only about 15% fermented. The longer an oolong tea is fermented, the more it tastes like a black tea. Therefore, pouchongs are much closer in flavor to a green tea. As with green and black teas, oolong teas are best from the first flush, when the weather is milder and the tea has had more rain.

Oolong teas have a fruity flavor and a very smooth finish that pairs beautifully with many fruit flavors. When choosing a flavored oolong tea, be certain to check as to whether it is a true oolong or pouchong, if you have a preference for a tea that is closer to green or closer to black.

Some of the best tea gardens only sell first flush black, green and oolong tea. Tea gardens that do harvest their tea all throughout the growing season should label their tea according to the harvest from which it was plucked, so there is no confusion about which teas are the best of the year. First flush teas are typically priced higher than teas harvested later in the season.

To choose the best quality flavored teas, you need to consider all of the following elements:

* The grade of the tea – this indicates the quality of the leaf itself.

* The tea plucking – this is a good measure of the tea’s flavor, as earlier pluckings are more flavorful.

* The quality of the flavorings – You should always choose teas flavored with all natural ingredients over those that use artificial flavorings.

By considering all of these elements, you’ll be able to choose a delicious, high quality tea, whether it’s green, black or oolong. Shop with tea merchants that specialize in only the very best quality of flavored loose teas, regardless of the variety.

Flavored teas are a wonderful treat. The combination of your favorite flavors with your favorite tea varieties makes for a great beverage, whether hot or cold, morning or evening. And, if you’ve never compared the taste of really high quality teas with that of inferior teas, you’ll be very surprised at the difference. High quality flavored teas are well worth the trouble and expense you’ll go to finding them!

The One Strategy That Bartenders Are Just Not Doing….And How YOU Can Take Advantage of the Situation

By: Theodore Watts

So you want to learn how to increase your tips? This report shows you the one strategy that I guarantee will increase your tips. Remember, it’s great to learn hundreds of recipes but bartending is so much more than drink recipes.

In this special report I will NOT give you a cookie cutter, bartending school lecture on bartending recipes and blah, blah, blah. I am going to cut all the fluff and just tell you how it’s done. The key here is that regardless of how many drinks you know how to make; even if you mix up a horrible drink every time you bartend you can still bankroll some huge tips!

*The Art of Branding Yourself*

Most bartenders don’t brand themselves and I just don’t understand why. Branding is about identification and trust. Most of us tend to associate branding with tangible products we encounter daily, such as soft drinks, handbags, and automobiles, but people also brand themselves.

I was known to never wear the same tie while I was bartending. They use to called me “Tie Wearing Teddy” because no other bartenders where I bartended wore ties. I separated myself from the other bartenders instantly by the clothes I wore. I was branded with the physical image of the guy that was always wearing a tie.

Women would come to the bar where I worked and ask “where is the guy with the tie?” They remembered me and since I provided great service, I was branded in their mind, good service = the guy that wears the ties.

The physical appearance you display to your customers are vital and could make or break you depending on the type of bar or club you work at. Look different or unique and stand apart from your fellow bartenders you work with.

*Branding yourself by designing your own drinks*

This is an awesome tip a good friend of mine does. He has successfully branded himself at his bar by designing his own drinks and made up names to go with each one. This is what he did…

- Design 10 to 15 drinks and name them

- After you create your drinks, create your personal brochure or flyer listing your drinks on them and emphasizing that they are a "Your Name Special Drink" – prepared exclusively by "Your Name"

- Make sure to put the flyer in a place where people can easily pick them up like (at the actual bar top you work on) or on the tables at the bar or club you work at. The great thing about this is that if they like the drink, they can only get it from you, so they will keep coming back with their money and more tips!

- To add the personal touch to the flyer, add your bio (biography) to it so that they can get to know you better. Your customers will actually feel that you are a “friend” rather than just someone who serves them drinks if they no a little about you.

Remember, a bartender is a salesman. You are in the business of not only selling drinks but of selling yourself as well. Your personality and charisma will take you very far. A bartender is a psychologist, a sociologist and a businessman all wrapped in one.

Safe Driving: Avoiding Collisions in Highways

By: Ivonne Jade Agustin

Almost every day, we see or hear about road accidents that inflict massive damages on properties, but still, statistics show that we will be involved in at least one road accident in our lifetime.

These accidents will cost the liable party great deal of fortune as he will be responsible for all the medical bills incurred by the victim for his injuries. In cases of fatalities, higher compensatory damages are expected for the lost life of an individual.

To avoid this, preventive measures should always be taken so as not to be the victim or the cause of these road accidents.

Dealing with Obstructions

Highway collisions can cause injuries that will forever remind us of our negligence. By removing ourselves from harm’s way, it is important that we know the following things that should be avoided while on road:

• Road Rage / Aggressive Drivers. It is important that we remain calm even if a motorist’s behavior is irritating. Rage will solve nothing and can even extend your time on the road because of senseless arguments.

If you encounter an aggressive driver (they are the one who constantly honks and screams obscene words and profanities), it is best to stay out of their way as they have a tendency to be violent and might use their vehicle as a weapon against you. Be the bigger man and just drive away.

• Speeding. Nothing is more important than our safety. Whether it is a job interview or a date with a special someone that we are rushing to get to, we should still follow the prescribed speed limit in each area.

We should keep in mind to go slower on residential neighborhoods, school, and church zones to avoid hitting crossing pedestrians.

• Tailgating. It is dangerous to keep a close distance between you and the preceding vehicle because the driver’s sudden decrease in speed can result to a rear-end collision where you will be held liable.

Every driver should be responsible in maintaining a considerable amount of distance from other vehicles so that they can adjust to the sudden change of speed.

• Drunk Drivers. It is negligent for someone to drive after drinking too much. In fact, in some establishments, the bartender takes the keys of a person who had too much to drink and has no one to drive him home.

If you suspect a motorist of DUI because of his driving behavior, alert the authorities before he can be a danger to himself and to other motorists.

• Road Constructions / Weather Changes. If you are not familiar with the road you are travelling on, it is best to go slow so that you can see warning devices that indicate road constructions and other road glitches that you may encounter.

Motorists travelling on a rainy day should keep in mind that roads are slippery and so their breaks may not be as effective. Again, slowing down is the safest way to go.

• Fatigue. For those who are too sleepy to drive, it would be wise to find a spot where they can legally park so they can rest and avoid falling asleep while driving.

• Vehicle Problems. For drivers who suspect malfunction in their vehicle, it is better to be safe and check it out on the shoulder lane before the defect gets out of hand and cause accidents.

• Distractions. Drivers should be responsible in the proper use of their mobile phones. They should free their hands of it while driving as it can distract them and divert their attention.
